During the third edition of „Economy of a Water City” Congress, we will talk about the complexity of ecosystem services, including mainly the water ones, which contribute to human well-being and wellness. They can be measured not only by economic values, but also by environmental, social and health benefits.

 

We cannot forget about the increasing effect of the urban heat island effect and the consequences of heat waves. Apart from the obvious influence of the climate on the city, the reverse relationship is also important. Therefore, it is worth considering which appropriate urban systems and building materials can strengthen or weaken the urban heat island effect.

 

Climate warming also determines the occurrence of sudden and heavy precipitation events of increasing intensity. Increasing local water retention can be an important part of reducing the risk of urban flooding. Surface rainwater management systems (including green roofs of buildings) may serve this purpose. The use of intelligent control systems for existing rainwater retention and outflow may also be an opportunity. Especially in densely developed areas with limited opportunities to create additional retention.

 

The aim of the Congress is to educate and improve public awareness of ecology and environmentally friendly behaviour. Equally important is the integration of the activities of businesses, farms and companies in the field of water treatment and management so that clean water is available to all, even the poorest inhabitants.

 

We also cannot forget about the cultural aspects of water. Following the Danube river, we will discover a monumental carrier of historical, collective and cultural memory of Central Europe.

 

Thinking about quality of life, we want to present the beneficial aspects of urban water in the BlueHealth project, and how careful design and implementation of urban “blue infrastructure” can benefit public health and effectively prevent disease.

 

The Congress will therefore provide an opportunity for a comprehensive debate on environmental problems affecting the quality of life, land-use planning taking into account the water environment and how water management affects cities and their inhabitants.
